Parallel port setup. Type the following command at the DOS prompt (if LPT1 is not available, use LPT2): MODE LPT1:,,P > NUL. You can add the MODE command to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that it takes effect every time you turn on your computer. (Refer to your PC user documentation.). For instance, an Arduino Uno will have its name in the description along with the COM port number, or a USB GPS will say its brand and model in the description along with its COM port number. Essentially, I want to do what this does. For example if you run a DOS batch file or any EXE, it is, by default, not set to have administrator-level. Configure a system device: COM / LPT port, or CMD console CON. Syntax Serial port: MODE COMm[:] [BAUD=b] [PARITY=p] [DATA=d] [STOP=s] [to=on off] [xon=on off] [odsr=on off] [octs=on off] [dtr=on off hs] [rts=on off hs tg] [idsr=on off] Device Status: MODE [device] [/STATUS] Redirect printing: MODE.

How would I go about viewing a list of COM ports in use without the use of Device Manager?

I don't want to install any software either. Is there a possible way to do this through the command line?

In the command prompt use

mode

Used without parameters, mode displays all the controllable attributes of the CON (console) and the available COM devices (and LPT as well).

Accepts /? switch for basic help:

mode /?

In the command prompt use:

OR

In PowerShell:

OR

Hope this helps.

I know the question has been answered, but this is another method.

In command prompt, use:
chgport
in windows Vista and up. Lists your ports and which device they are.

Using mode most of the time I don't see the devices that are not connected.

I prefer to use this solution with Python:

So I can see anything plugged in even if the connection is closed.

serial.tools.list_ports is from package pyserial.

wmic https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/wmisdk/wmic is a windows command line utility to get system information.

If your serial port is virtual created by some driver through USB connection, use this example to get details about these serial ports.

You can also run the following from cmd.exe prompt

And here is an open source utility to do the same and more:https://todbot.com/blog/2012/03/02/listcomports-windows-command-line-tool-for-usb-to-serial/

The snippet below lists serial ports into the $PORTS variable

PORTS=/c/Windows/System32/mode.com grep Status.*COM awk '{ print $4 }' sed s/://

echo -n 'Programming (echoing) ports: 'for aa in $PORTS; do echo -n $aadoneecho '

eeggss: Is there a file holding the authentic or not?
timppu: Either uninstall and reinstall the game, or if that is not an option (because you'd lose your progress in the game then), go back to the game DOS settings and select the correct audio cards.
Setup Music Card => MPU-401 General MIDI => 330 => Play Music
Usb (If you don't get any music or get some error, select Soundblaster 16 as the music card.)
Then Setup Digital FX Card => Soundblaster 16 => 220 => 5 => 1 => 5 => Play Sample => Enter => Normal Channels => Exit Menu.
Then Save Settings and either Run WC3, or Exit.
Are you still having some issue?
eeggss: So what would be the reason there is no 'SIMPLE ORIGINAL BACK-UP' like thing for GOG. Since some might want to
add their own sound, but then might want to get rid of it, and can't remember what GOG's original was?
If I had choose ROLAND-MT, like KOBI-K asked, what TIMPUU is saying is this, I would have chose wrong 'MUSIC CARD' , and so, like the warning said my SCSI HARDWARE would have been damaged.
You should speak on what SCSI HARWARE being damaged is.
timppu: Those warnings are irrelevant as the game is running in a DOSBox emulator. That setup program you see is not made by GOG, but it is the game's original setup program from the early 1990s. Those hardware (SCSI) warnings were relevant only when running the original game in a 1990s PC (and even the probably only if you had some SCSI interface hardware, which most home PCs didn't have due to price).
It may be selecting MT-32 in this game produces normal General MIDI music too. Anyway I suggest you select the General MIDI option, or if it doesn't work, Soundblaster (16). No matter what you choose in that game, it can't damage your hardware in any way. I did un-install. It seems as if it saved, not having sound. Like in the cloud. Now,are you sure about your answer?

Yes I am sure, I tested it myself. Dos Com Port Settings
One thing though, I don't use the Galaxy client, so I installed the game with the offline installers that GOG provides. I have no idea how Galaxy uninstalls games, and whether it leaves some configuration files sitting around.
If you completely uninstall the game and then re-install it, then it should be in its default settings again.
Did you try running the game DOS settings again and setting the audio options as I suggested? Still a problem?

eeggss: This what kod-k said, 'Here are the optimal GOG sound settings:
Music Card > Roland MT-32/LAPC-1 > I/O Port: 330
Digital FX Card > Sound Blaster 16 > I/O Port: 220 > IRQ: 5 > DMA Lo: 1 > DMA Hi: 5
Set Subtitles > On'
So do you mean sound blaster in 'MUSIC CARD' or in 'DIGITAL FX CARD'?
Do I have to do the, IRQ, and DMA LO too?
These can seem complicated if you are not familiar how MS-DOS gaming in the 1990s used to be. Yeah it was a bit messy back then, both with memory management and the sound card selections (as well as video modes sometimes, if SVGA modes were used; or 3D accelerator support for graphics...). DOSBox emulation makes this simpler on GOG games because you don't usually have to touch e.g. the port/IRQ/DMA settings, but just use the defaults.
For DOS game sound selections, as a general rule of thumb:
- For a digital sound effects card, select Soundblaster 16 with its default settings. If it is missing, then Soundblaster Pro, or Soundblaster. You can use the default port/IRQ/DMA settings that the game offers.
- For a music card, select General MIDI (sometimes called MPU-401 General MIDI, or Roland SCC-1, or Roland Sound Canvas). If not available, select Soundblaster 16, or Pro, or just Soundblaster. You can use the default port/IRQ/DMA settings that the game offers.

Check Com Port Settings In Dos

- For older games, it may be there are no Soundblasters (nor General MIDI) available, Then select Adlib.
- Disregard any other sound card options, they were mainly for some more exotic sound cards that DOSBox doesn't necessarily support.
- Don't select e.g. Roland MT-32/LAPC-1/CM-32L/etc. as your music nor sound effects card UNLESS you have installed and are using a Roland MT-32 emulator (called 'Munt'; google for it), info also available on GOG forums. For those games that support Roland MT-32/LAPC-1/CM-32L, selecting it would give you the best music quality, BUT only if you are using the Munt emulator. Otherwise, it will produce erroneous audio.
- If the game offers both Roland MT-32/LAPC-1/CM-32L and General MIDI (like Wing Commander 3 does), as a general rule of thumb select the General MIDI option, even if you are using Munt.
PS. There are ways to make General MIDI sound better on Windows PCs (making all those DOS games using General MIDI sound better too), but it involves installing extra software like the CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth on your PC and downloading replacement General MIDI soundfonts (like Chorium Rev A) to be used with it, and possibly making some config changes to the games. But you can keep using the Windows General MIDI player, even if it doesn't sound as good.
