The most notable of those gold medals was R15 – the only Driver to earn 20 out of 20 stars, with five. Adams product line is by no means limited to Tight Lies fairway woods, as the company produces and sells a full range of product including drivers, wedges, putters, hybrid irons and more. 1973
- Club designer and former Australian amateur golf champ Thomas Crow founds a small golf club company, and names it Cobra Golf.
1975
- Develops the 'Baffler' - the first utility wood. It introduces a new category of clubs, plus sets the standard for future Cobra product development. The Baffler has a patented sole-plate design that's effective from various lies.
1979
- Introduces the extended-length driver, a 46-inch driver with a graphite head and shaft.
1985

1989

- 'The Shark' signs an endorsement contract, and assists Crow in the development of Cobra's first line of forged irons.

1994
- King Cobra oversize irons become the performance standard and golf's best-selling irons. Oversized irons represented a whole new club category. Thus, Cobra became synonymous with oversized irons.
1996
- Fall, The most extensive line of new Cobra products ever is introduced, featuring the new King Cobra II Irons and Ti Offset woods. The King Cobra II irons feature an integrated Quad system which combines four distinct technological features: A new heel-weighting hosel, dual-purpose sole, reinforced shaft tip shape, and optimal progressive weight distribution system - all to create longer, more accurate shots.
1998
- Fall, Cobra launches the Baffler LP fairway metal and a new Baffler utility metal. The Baffler LP combines the benefits of offset with the unique Baffler sole design and a sleek, shallow face profile. The Baffler utility wood, like the original, helps golfers get the ball out of fluffy lies, hard pan and buried lies.
- Designed by short-game guru Phil Rogers, the Trusty Rusty wedges launch. They're made of soft, unplated carbon steel, and feature a tri-bounce sole design characterized by the distinctive scallop in the back of the flange -- for versatility and feel.
1999
- Fall, Backweight technology is the driving force behind the new Gravity Back drivers, fairway woods and irons. Weight is placed further back and lower in the clubhead, expanding the sweet spot and making it easier to get the ball airborne. The backweight technology also optimizes the club's Moment of Inertia, resulting in straighter, longer shots.
- Dista golf balls are introduced, maximizing distance for all players, in four models defined by swing speeds.
2000
- Cobra unveils CXI irons, focused on the evolution of the sole design. Each iron has a variation on width, radius and camber, as well as an 'X' reinforcement bar in the cavity that delivers feel and stability.
- Cobra launches the Airweight shaft, the industry's first iron graphite shaft weighing less than 50 grams.
2001
- The company introduces Baffler Multi-Metal irons that are designed as hybrids, combining the best of long iron design with the best of higher-lofted fairway metals. The sleek progressive clubhead features strategic placement of copper tungsten sole weights and a bronze alloy backweight -- effectively positioning the center of gravity low and deep to promote a higher trajectory.
- Fall, King Cobra drivers and fairway metals are re-launched with the introduction of King Cobra SS ('Sweet Spot') driver and metals. The driver has a thin, hot oval beta titanium insert surrounded by an even thinner titanium ring, providing increased perimeter weighting for maximum COR values over 9 points across the face. 2002
- Cobra releases the King Cobra SS oversize irons that feature an oversize cavity back, thin face and perimeter weighting for a superior sweet spot, greater distance and accuracy. The irons boast a cavity 'muscle arch' for solid feel, along with a tungsten insert in the long irons for higher trajectory. A new skid sole design promotes solid contact from all lies.
- King Cobra Phil Rodgers wedges emerge, bearing the skid sole design and soft, unplated carbon steel.
2003
- January, King Cobra SS 380 driver launches, capitalizing on the industry's larger clubhead trend. The SS 350 Tour also comes out, appealing to lower handicappers and broadening Cobra's appeal to consumers.
- Also in January the King Cobra SS-I irons are introduced. An improved design over previous SS irons, the irons incorporate new softer 431 alloy and new undercut cavity back design filled with urethane to enhance feel.
- M (muscle back) wedges hit the market, offering improved performance and feel.
- January, A new SS-i iron custom fitting program debuts to 500 on-course fitting accounts.
- King Cobra SS drivers are the No. 1-selling driver model in unit sales, for combined on-off course shops in May, June, July and August per Golf Datatech.
- September, Cobra Aussie Series putter line is introduced in eight models, each featuring a 17-4 steel body and milled 6061 soft alloy face insert for soft, solid feel, plus a high MOI.
- September, Cobra launches the SZ/JR junior set in two distinct sizes with age-appropriate shaft flex, clubhead weight and grip size.
- October, King Cobra SZ 'Sweet Zone' drivers debut with expanded, hotter clubface, replacing the King Cobra SS with improved 9 hot points across the clubface for more carry distance and improved accuracy.
- November, King Cobra SZ fairway metals hit the market. They're larger in volume and face area, for more forgiveness.

2004
- April, the company launches King Cobra COMP 454, 414 and 414 Tour drivers that feature a lightweight carbon composite crown, in which weight's moved further low and back, head volume is increased for a higher MOI, and clubface area is increased to maximize COR over 9 points across the face. The COMP 454 and 414 also include the 45-gram Mitsubishi Rayon SL-45 shaft, the industry's lightest shaft, which increases swing speed for added carry distance.

- February, Geoff Ogilvy wins WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship for his second Tour win, ousting six higher-ranked players, including four major champions.
- Optica SL debuts as the first putter using Fiber Optic Technology to help golfers align putts. It uses the exclusive TRUGLO Fiber Optic sight line.
- May, Cobra unveils the HS9 (High Speed across the Hotter 9 Points) Series drivers and fairways with carbon composition crown and sole integration, which raises the MOI. If you look on the last page of the drivers, you'll see a alittle blip titled 'Still The Champ' Sounds like they were paid to write what they wrote about TM. It's making me madd. And there is no love for Titleist in the driver category, NONE! What the heck? Even I think their clubs are good. And, I've come to a conclusion that GD hates cleveland woods. It's always TM and Nike. Arrrg! This is making me mad!

- edited Jan 7, 2006#16As far as the drivers and fairways are concerned I will never remotely believe the rankings until Headcovers are added. They are certainly as important as buzzzzzz. Always humorous to read but can honestly say I have never been influenced to try anything by these ratings. Quite the opposite, I have avoided some things that were recommended due to the silly way things are evaluated. For example I have tested and owned everything they have listed and more and the Sasquatch isn't even in the top 5 (including the Tour) for me. Obviously the scientists involved had no input as to how the evaluations were conducted. I notice the liquid metal guy was there---that will get me to try/buy something. Maybe I can bounce a ball bearing off my club face longer than others---that helps. My purchases come on one basis and one basis only MY TESTING, not some article, advertising, excitement on a forum. The bottom line is what works for me not what worked for Joe Blow or who was influenced by buzzzzz.

Last year they actually assigned a point ranking to each club, and they didn't even go so far as to do that this year. - #18I have to agree, I've tried alot of the clubs they give high ratings to and wasn't all that impressed.

And the SQ is a great driver, but far from the best, even based on price/performance (I'd give that to Ping's G5 or Cleveland's Launcher 460)
None the less, I think the Hotlist has very little or any credibility anymore.
They should make it based on votes from readers and players, not those hacks they use to test them - #19Could not agree with you guys more ! Golf digest should give information on the new equipment because we are all interested and enjoy seeing the new pictures. However, the biased comments coming from 20 handicappers with over-the-top swings is getting a little out of hand. This was just a little marketing game and nothing more.
It would be nice to see someone really do a big genuine club test. Have some human golfers as well as some robot testing to give some honest feedback. It would be nice to see someone really do a big genuine club test. Have some human golfers as well as some robot testing to give some honest feedback. No buzz factor score (or even headcovers!) just facts (distance, speed, trajectory etc) Each person swings differently but it would at least be a good compairsion of the clubs instead of the warm fuzzies Golf Digest gave eveyone.
That's what I was thinking. They should show the shot patterns for each club, with color coded ball flight lines to show what the different handicaps did with the club. Then, list the spin rates, distance, and ball speed. It make take up alot of room in the magazine, and it may take more time, but it would show what people with my handicap were doing on average. Problem is, I'm looking for honest review, aka, tell me what the ball did. Did it hook left, banana ball right, or fly straight? Thats what I wanna see. But, time is money, and GD clearly wants money over making an honest review. BUT... One thing to remember is that they really can't bash companies too much, otherwise they won't get advertising slots filled by the biggest advertisers. Notice, month to month, the biggest advertisers are TM, Callaway, and Nike, with mulitple ads every issue(this is where your post comes in Johnny). So, since GD makes most of their money off the advertisements, they don't wanna make OEMs angry at them.

The others I could not locate. I believe this is the first time they included higher handicap panelists. I'm thinking the idea would be to receive feedback from players who better represent the golfer the club is designed for.
I would agree that I would like to see the Buzz Factor removed, but otherwise I disagree that the feature is worthless. There's a lot of clubs by big advertisers that get left off the list. Does anybody have any real disagreements with certain clubs being recommended? Just curious.
Unfortunately, I for one, can only dream of buying a new set of clubs. I have to file the article, and pull it out a couple of years later to try to buy closeouts or slightly-used. - #25We all know its about ad dollars (pay for play). Golf Digest uses it as a tool to boost ad revenue before the issue comes out.

- #27I believe Golf World did a driver testing using a swing robot and humans a couple months ago. Based on their rankings, I think the Ignite was 2nd accuracy, 2nd distance; R5 was 1st accuracy, 5th distance; and FT-3 was 3rd accuracy, 1st distance.
- #28They may have given the Sasquatch extra points due to Tiger's affiliation with Nike and their magazine, but I don't think so. Last I saw he was still using his Ignite.
Still I thought the list was a good reference point, although I do agree their catagories are a bit fubar.
Either way I love the game. I love watching it and reading about all aspects of it. So biased or not (and I don't think they are too biased if at all) and relevant to me or not I still get enough information and entertainment value out of the magazine.
Also, I think most of you are pretty hard core golfers and are most likely better than a lot of their high-handicap golfers, so it is natural for their opinions to mean less to you. - edited Jan 13, 2006#29In my experience, you can take forty guys, give them a dozen or so different drivers with various shafts and get a wide range of opinions about what is the 'best'. What it really all comes down to is fitting. If the club isn't a good match for a player's swing style, the person without much insight will declare the club to be a worthless piece of junk with the added obligatory 'the stock shaft is a POS' comment. The 'clubsmart' players will figure out how to hit the thing, be well aware of the swing type it was designed for and recommend it for people they think it will fit.
The people who design and build these clubs are not stupid. They build clubs that work. If the magazine articles trashed a club there would be an endless stream of posts on forums about how they got it wrong because the Long Tom Turkey Shoot Driver from PowerMedalist is the greatest club in history and barely legal.

Scotty Cameron Squareback - #30The hot list is ok, but I think it is based too much on what the editors think and how the money backed up their thinking. I have always preferred Golf Magazine's Club Test as I feel it is less biased since they use 40 people with a range of handicaps. It is much more helpful to read than the hot list.
- #31My problem with Golf Magazine's test is they don't test that many clubs. Golf Digest at least tests most of what is available, and according to the list they provided, a lot of clubs that were discontinued at the end of '05. The recommended choices in the Hot List are more like 25%, not 75%. I think the best would be a combination of the two, with a larger panel of players with varied handicap indexes rating the large sample of clubs that Golf Digest uses, while printing the rankings the way Golf Magazine does.
