9.6.1.3 A fire alarm system required for life safety shall be installed, tested, and maintained in accordance with the applicable requirements of NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, and NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, unless it is an approved existing installation, which shall be permitted to be. In R-1, R-2, R-4, and I-1 occupancies, listed single- and multiple-station smoke alarms complying with UL 217 shall be installed in accordance with provisions of this code and the household fire warning equipment provision of NFPA 72. Smoke alarms shall be addressable with sounder bases and tied into the building fire.
Automatic sprinkler systems shall be monitored by an approved supervising station.
Nfpa 72 Fire Alarm Installation
Exceptions:

House Building Codes for Smoke Alarms. Properly installed and functioning fire alarms increase the odds of surviving a house fire by 50 percent, according to the California state fire marshal. It is not surprising, then, that building codes throughout the United States typically follow the International Building Code.
1.A supervising station is not required for automatic sprinkler systems protecting one- and two-family dwellings.
2.Limited area systems serving fewer than 20 sprinklers.
Fire alarm systems required by the provisions of Section 907.2 of this code and Sections 907.2 and 907.9 of the International Fire Code shall be monitored by an approved supervising station in accordance with Section 907.6.6.
Exceptions:
1.Single- and multiple-station smoke alarms required by Section 907.2.11.
2.Smoke detectors in Group I-3 occupancies.
3.Supervisory service is not required for automatic sprinkler systems in one- and two-family dwellings.
Supervision and monitoring of emergency alarm, detection and automatic fire-extinguishing systems in Group H occupancies shall be in accordance with the International Fire Code.
